Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

To mitigate the catastrophic consequences of climate change driven by global warming, society must urgently reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition towards a net-zero future. This imperative presents us with the complex energy trilemma of security, affordability, and sustainability.

Our department has a wide range of expertise from fundamental fluid mechanics, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and mechanics, to solar, wind, and thermal energy technologies. Leveraging our department's leading expertise, we are poised to make an important contribution in addressing these formidable challenges through the exploration of renewable energy sources, the advancement of novel concepts and processes, the innovation of efficient energy technologies, and the digitalisation of our energy systems.There is a broad spectrum of aerospace-related research that is conducted within the Department, ranging from the development of advanced computational fluid dynamics codes and flight simulation assessment technologies to autonomous flight control and space mission planning. At the forefront of aerospace technology, the Department’s interdisciplinary team collaboratively tackles complex aerospace-related challenges. The team are dedicated to the development of sustainable and efficient solutions to ensure safer, more reliable, and environmentally conscious air and space travel. The Department works closely both with partners within the University, such as the Digital Innovation Facility as well as external industrial and academic partners.

The Department offers three-year BEng and four-year MEng undergraduate programmes in both Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering and further three/four-year BEng/MEng programmes in Aerospace Engineering with Pilot Studies. All of these courses are available with an option to spend a Year in Industry.  We also offer a number of one-year taught postgraduate (MSc) degree programmes in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering-related topics.

The Department has exceptional research facilities including full motion flight simulators, wind tunnels, a 90,000l recirculating water tunnel. It also has a new low Reynolds number flow facility, as part of the recent £23m National Wind Tunnel Facility award.

A new laboratory dedicated to energy technologies and space research are currently in development.
