What is Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest and broadest of the Engineering disciplines. It is sought by employers in almost all sectors of Engineering and beyond. Our professionally accredited degree programmes offer an exciting blend of learning experiences designed to ensure our students not only master the scientific fundamentals, but also develop the skills, attitudes and experience demanded by 21st-century engineering and society.

Our graduates go on to work in fields such as medicine and healthcare, sustainable power generation, environmental technology, food production, sports science, aerospace, automotive, construction, nuclear, mechatronics & robotics, industrial product design, manufacturing, and project management. Engineering graduates are also in demand in sectors such as accountancy, management consulting, and logistics. More than any other discipline, a degree in Mechanical Engineering is preparation for an enormously wide range of careers.

What is the difference between BEng and MEng degrees?

The MEng is a four-year integrated Master’s degree developed to fast-track our graduates to become Chartered Engineers with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Chartered Engineers (CEng) are the leaders of industry and develop solutions to engineering problems using new or existing technologies, through innovation, creativity and change. They take responsibility for complex systems with significant levels of risk.

The MEng degree is recognised throughout the UK and fully satisfies the Engineering Council’s academic requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer. The three-year BEng (Bachelor’s) degree shares the first 3 years as the MEng degree and consequently only partially satisfies the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer status. BEng graduates can then carry on to do, for example, a specialist Master’s degree, to meet the full academic requirements. This can often be achieved whilst in full time employment based upon schemes run within industry. The BEng degree does satisfy all the academic requirements for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) professional registration.

UCAS CODE: H301
PROGRAMME LENGTH: 4 YEARS

UCAS CODE: H300
PROGRAMME LENGTH: 3 YEARS

The 3 year BEng and 4 year MEng degree programmes cover all the main Engineering topics required in preparation for a career in Mechanical Engineering and related disciplines. As well as core Engineering Science, Mathematics, Management, Group Design and Practical and Professional Skills modules, there are optional modules that allow you to add a flavour in order to personalise your degree. Our options are aligned to key world class research/professional strengths for the School of Engineering. A choice of 3rd year individual projects also aligned to research strengths allows you to pursue a particular Engineering topic of interest.

The BEng degree in Mechanical Engineering satisfies all the academic requirements for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) professional registration. The MEng degree in Mechanical Engineering satisfies all the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) professional registration.

The 4 year Integrated Masters MEng degree programme incorporates all the elements of the BEng programme but allows you to continue to advance your knowledge and understanding of the subject and to develop new skills to a high level. A key aspect of the MEng programme is the 2 year capstone group project over years 3 and 4. Examples of this project include the Formula Student racing car and the Velocipede world record breaking bike team, where students get the opportunity to put their new knowledge into practice in real world challenges, working like and engineer to become an engineer.

Our ethos is to spend as much time outside the lecture theatre as possible. Our students spend a significant amount of their time working in teams to apply their learning in the solution of practical problems; or in the design, building and testing of new products processes and systems. This means our graduates are very well prepared for their careers ahead, and industry recognises them as highly employable.

Mechanical Engineering with Year in Industry MEng/BEng (Hons)

UCAS CODE: H303
PROGRAMME LENGTH: 5 YEARS

UCAS CODE: H302
PROGRAMME LENGTH: 4 YEARS

The 4 year BEng and 5 year MEng degree programmes cover all the main Engineering topics required in preparation for a career in Mechanical Engineering and related disciplines. Within the Year in Industry programmes, students are encouraged to spend their third year undertaking a one year placement with an approved company/organisation to gain relevant work experience and enhance their employability. Students are supported throughout 1st and 2nd year to apply for competitive 1-year placement opportunities. The year in industry is dependent upon placements being available and on is subject to your performance in previous years.
