Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering was formed in August 2023 in recognition of the explicit relationship between civil engineering and the environment. As civil engineers, we must meet the needs of society, whilst eliminating any negative environmental impact of infrastructure we provide. That is the challenge upon which teaching and research in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is focussed.

Using the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals as a starting point and operating within the themes of Sustainable Futures, Environmental & Human Health, and Fluids in Nature, our multidisciplinary world-class researchers use cutting edge experimental and computational facilities to tackle key global challenges such as climate change, net zero engineering solutions, future cities, and infrastructure resilience, whilst also providing innovative, research-led teaching input to our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

The research in the Department covers many engineering and design disciplines in fields including structural engineering, sustainable construction materials, geomechanics, water and environmental engineering, coastal sediment dynamics, tidal energy, transportation engineering, biomaterials and biomechanics. The Department works closely with the School of Environmental Sciences and the School of Architecture.

The Department offers three-year BEng and four-year MEng undergraduate programmes in Architectural Engineering and Civil Engineering and a further four-year MEng programme in Civil & Structural Engineering.  We also offer a one-year taught postgraduate MSc in Sustainable Civil & Structural Engineering.

The Department has excellent employability outcomes, due in part to the strong industrial links we maintain through our well-established Industrial Liaison Committee, comprising local and regional industrial partners. This provides valuable industrial input into teaching, curriculum development, research and the mentoring of our undergraduate MEng students.
