MBA Career and Leadership Development Programme

Here at the Management School, we want you to realise your career aspirations, connect with fellow students, experts, academics and the wider business community and become lifelong members of our thriving MBA Alumni community, making a difference globally.

Our MBA students are ambitious and seek advancement and success in their professional lives. We recognise that an MBA is a significant investment and that our students want to see a return on that investment by realising their career aspirations.

We share that aspiration and work hard to provide the tools and resources that enable our students to leverage their learning effectively and find fruitful, rewarding careers.

The Career and Leadership Development Programme is designed with the end in mind, with a clear purpose - to enrich the MBA journey by challenging your thinking about your own professional, career and leadership development.

Active participation in the programme deepens awareness of self, strengths, motivations and aspirations, and enables participants to confidently articulate and leverage the MBA to attain impact and influence in their careers.

Support from a dedicated career & leadership coach

What is unique about the Career and Leadership Development Programme is that each student has the support of Bernie Lyons, their dedicated MBA Career & Leadership Development Coach throughout.

On arrival, there is an initial meeting, working with Bernie to review experiences, clarify goals and develop your individual development plan with steps and desired outcomes.

Psychometric profiling at the outset develops a deeper understanding of self, motivations and drivers, helping you to make effective career decisions.

Students have access to Bernie's support and resources for up to five years after they graduate and, as lifelong members of our global MBA community, become part of our active alumni group.

We welcome students back to offer encouragement, motivation and mentoring to the next generation of MBA students.

At the start of the semester, we introduce the planned activities, but even before you start your MBA, you can access the University’s central career pages. They provide award-winning services for Postgraduate students and we highly recommend connecting with them early in the process.

Programme timetable

The programme starts with weekly impactful sessions, supported by online practice materials with action points completed as part of your Career Peer Learning Pods - small clusters of peers to support your personal development.

The weekly sessions are supplemented by in-depth leadership sessions, raising your own self-awareness and other essential leadership development areas. Leadership challenges are then brought to life through Alumni guest speaker sessions.

There are two weeks each year dedicated to employability and professional development activities. We conduct assessments to replicate corporate recruitment, as well as interview skills, personal impact and networking masterclasses. We go off-site into Liverpool venues and invite our local alumni to join us.

Support from business and alumni

The Management School has strong links with local businesses, and our MBA Alumni community so there are opportunities to network and connect outside of the curriculum-based activities and international trips. We also run our MBA Alumni Mentoring Programme so have access to leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators who will inspire and guide you.

Our Sector Insights Series draws from experts from Finance, Consultancy, FMCG, FinTech, Social Enterprise and Entrepreneurship. We also get out and about in the City, the wider region and internationally for immersive experiences seeing industry and culture up close, and offer consultancy to local businesses and start-ups to help them thrive.
