Rita graduated from the University of Lisbon (Portugal) in 2003. After one year working as a small animal practitioner in South Yorkshire, she completed an internship at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket. She then moved to Scotland where she completed her residency in Neurology and Neurosurgery and also a Masters degree in Neurology at the University of Glasgow.
She was awarded the European Diploma in Veterinary Neurology in September 2008 and became an RCVS recognized specialist in this discipline in 2012. She has been at the University of Liverpool since 2009 and became a Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Neurology and Head of the Neurology and Neurosurgery Service in 2012.
