Beyond the Boundary: An exhibition exploring cricket and the legacies of slavery at the International Slavery Museum, Liverpool: 19 March 2010 – 13 February 2011

Underwater: Around 375 million years ago, our ancestors crawled out of the waters...Underwater is about the experience of total submersion and brings together the most compelling underwater- inspired artworks of the past decade, including a work by Ellen Gallagher, and proposes that underwater is a compelling motif of our times: The Bluecoat, Liverpool: 11 December 2010 - 13 February 2011

From Kabul to Kandahar: 1833-1933: From scenes and descriptions of market places in Kabul in 1842 to panoramic views of the city of Kandahar taken after the second Anglo-Afghan war of 1878-80, these largely unseen materials provide a glimpse of the communities, customs and histories of this mountainous country. Beyond the Blues: An exhibition presenting over 125 years of art by African American artists and about the African American experience from the Fine Art Collections of the Amistad Research Center at New Orleans Museum of Art. 10 April 2010 - 11 July 2010

Kingdom of Ife: Sculptures from West Africa: This major exhibition at the British Museum presents exquisite examples of brass, copper, stone and terracotta sculpture from West Africa. Extended till 4 July 2010

Seminars, Lectures, Symposia and Workshops

In and Out of Brussels: Africa Inside Europe Seminar: A by-invitation seminar on Sven Augustijnen's new film Spectres (2011) will take place at Wiels, Contemporary Art Centre (Brussels) on Saturday May 21, 2011 (14.00). It will be possible to applicants who send a motivated letter by April 7th, 2011, to fill in potentially remaining places. This is a multifaceted project, including an intensive collaboration between international theoreticians, art critics, and Brussels-based artists over a two year period. "Delia’s Tears: Race, Science, and Photography in Nineteenth-Century America": A Conversation with the Author, Molly Rogers: In 1850 seven South Carolina slaves were photographed at the request of the famous naturalist Louis Agassiz to provide evidence of the supposed biological inferiority of Africans. In the first narrative history of these images, Molly Rogers tells the story of the photographs, the people they depict, and the men who made and used them. The Second John La Rose Memorial Lecture: Jayne Cortez - 'The Changing Nature of Black Cultural Politics 1960 - 2010': commemorates the life and work of John La Rose (1927–2006). Jayne Cortez is a major international poet, who has long been active in the struggle for black social liberation and for radical, political and social change in the USA.
