David Dunster Studio

Prof. David Dunster (1945-2019) taught at Liverpool from 1995 until 2010. Educated at the Bartlett and having taught there, at South Bank and Kingston, he was Head of Department from 1995 to 2000. Teaching design, history & theory, and urban studies he created a vibrant teaching environment, bringing numerous high calibre critics from practice and academia to the school. Firmly believing in architecture as a team effort, he implemented group work for design projects in the MArch programme, which to this day remains an important part of the school’s curriculum. For Prof. Dunster the most important aspect of being at Liverpool was to pass on his vast knowledge and experience to his students, and their education and well-being were his key concerns. David was a larger-than-life character, and while he took architectural education very seriously, he always appreciated the more funny and absurd aspects of architecture and life.
