Personal Statement

Dr. Jorge E. Hernandez is the Director of studies for the Business Analytics and Big Data Master programme and Associate Professor at University of Liverpool Management School. Dr. Hernandez leads the areas of Operations and Simulation Management in the field of Agri-Food and HealthCare. This, by gathering current and up-to-date challenges, requirements, and constraints from a variety of sectors, which is fully supported by the 10 years of successful professional experience before becoming an academic. Dr Hernandez is also the N8 Academic Lead for the University of Liverpoo.

As a researcher, Dr. Hernandez has been awarded, in 2016, with the ULMS researcher of the year award. In 2014, Universitat Politècnica de València conferred to him the extraordinary international award to best Ph.D. Thesis dissertation. in 2009, he received a special award recognition in 2009 for his pioneering work on Collaborative Supply Chain Management on Reverse Logistics. Dr. Hernandez has obtained his Ph.D. in 2011 in the field of Collaborative Production Planning for Logistics and Supply Chain Management, getting a cum-laude maximum distinction. His work can be found in more than 40 publications, covering International high rated Journals, Springer Books, Book Chapters and International Conferences and also through the supervision of Msc and Ph.D. Thesis.

In parallel to this, Dr. Hernandez is the Principal Investigator and Project Coordinator of a €1.3M H2020-MSCA-RISE project, RUC-APS: Enhancing and implementing Knowledge-based ICT solutions within high Risk and Uncertain Conditions for Agriculture Production Systems. This projects involve 7 countries (UK, France, Spain, Italy, Poland, Chile and Argentina), leading to international research and impact within an unprecedented innovative and multidisciplinary consortium cross faculty at the University of Liverpool Management School, involving +100 researchers. In this same line, and in collaboration with the N8 project, Dr. Hernandez is currently leading a research grant named SIMULAGRIT, which is oriented to model the key decision-making processes in British Agri-Food system considering the PRE BREXIT effect. Both grants are expected to lead to high IMPACT in Agri-Food policy making. But, nothing of this is a coincidence, because since 2009, Dr. Hernandez has got involved in several international projects, such as FP7 and ERDF, from which Dr. Hernandez has been able to enhance his research experience in the Operations Management field. Dr. Hernandez is also member of the recently created Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Food Systems, which covers the breadth of food systems research, from crop and animal sciences to supply chain management and food consumption. Currently, in 2020, Dr. Hernandez is also leading international research projects with ODA regions to better understand the implications of COVID-19 in food supply chains resilience, which is jointly developed with Ministries of Agriculture in Chile and Argentina.

Dr. Hernandez is expert in modelling and simulation, skills highly required by industry from a variety of sectors. This makes Dr. Hernandez a genuine Operations Management expert, providing a relevant and unique contribution to the applied research and academia at the ULMS. The most of this work lead to Dr. Hernandez to get interested in the following areas Modelling and Simulation, MultiAgent System, Collaboration in the Supply Chain and Operational Research, within the main application to Manufacturing, Healthcare and Agribusiness industries.
