Abstract

Many companies and governments are now conscious of their status as employers and their public responsibilities, and they are increasingly motivated to bring about positive social change. For instance, numerous organizations have initiated diversity interventions to foster inclusivity in the workplace and are actively working to promote women into higher management positions.

Moreover, both organizations and governments are relying more on moral appeals to influence and correct undesirable behavior. Nonetheless, the results regarding the effectiveness of these well-intentioned initiatives are mixed, and there is still much we don't know about what makes them successful.

In my presentation, I will first discuss our research on how gender interventions are evaluated by different subgroups within organizations. We have also explored how women are treated by their peers once they assume top positions, such as non-executive board members of a company.

Next, I will share the preliminary results of a new meta-analysis examining the overall impact of moral appeals on people, as well as the various factors that enhance their effectiveness. While our study results are still in the exploratory phase, our aim is to provide insights that can assist governments and organizations in implementing practices that effectively shape people's social behavior, both in the workplace and in society at large.

I will end my talk with an overview of the editorial process at the Academy of Management Journal, where I serve as an associate editor.

Speaker

Floor Rink is a full professor and the chair of the Organizational Behavior department at the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Groningen (The Netherlands).

Floor conducts cross-boundary research by applying psychological theory to explain people’s responses to organizational and economic phenomena. She uses both quantitative and qualitative methods in her research (e.g., surveys, experiments, ESM, archival data, case studies).

Two main areas of expertise are: (1) issues related to social inequality (e.g., diversity, status and power dynamics, identity processes) and (2) strategic leadership and governance (e.g., CEO/board decision-making, ethics). Her findings have been published in academic journals like the Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, Psychological Science, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes & the Academy of Management Annals.

Her work received recognition from several (inter) national scientific associations (e.g., FEBRI, the American Psychology Association, the Academy of Management, the Strategic Management Society), and obtained funding from multiple agencies (e.g., the Dutch Science Foundation, the Dutch Central Bank).

She held visiting positions at Kellogg School of Management and Exeter University and is currently a research affiliate of the Global Institute for Women's Leadership at the Australian National University (ANU).
