Unravelling the Impact of Interest Rates in Uncertain Economic Times

We are delighted to welcome Bank of Greece Governor, Yannis Stournaras, for a guest speaker talk, where he will explore the impact of interest rates in the context of increasing cost of living.

Hosted by the Management School’s Accounting and Finance Group, the event will be chaired by the Financial Times Acting US Economics Editor  Claire Jones.

Yannis will discuss how interest rates are set by central banks and how likely it is that they lowered them in the near future, with particular focus on:

  • Will interest rates remain as they are for an extended period?
  • When can businesses and consumers anticipate a change in interest rates?

With lower borrowing costs making businesses more likely to invest, and lower mortgage rates allowing for increased consumer spending, these are key questions to understand how likely the UK and the global economy are to start growing strongly in the short-term.

The event is open to academics and businesses, with attendees having the opportunity to ask further questions and network.

Speaker

As well as the current Governor of the Bank of Greece, Yannis Stournaras is also a Member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank and Chairman of the Audit Committee of the European Central Bank.

He also served as Minister of Finance in Greece, from July 2012 to June 2014.
