Abstract

In this paper I advance the case for academic freedom in autocratic regimes. I define the key concepts and explore the problem of academic censorship at academic publishers operating in autocratic countries.I review the practices and potential countermeasures in this industry.

In particular, I show how the Political CSR approach and deliberation can be used effectively to protect academic freedom even in countries that restrict freedom of speech and limit the right to education.

I propose implications for various actors, such as journal editors, academic associations, universities, academic publishers, civil society actors that potentially will be useful in protecting academic freedom.
