CFD Tools

Although the costs of performing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analyses are not insignificant, CFD can be considerably cheaper than performing wind-tunnel testing, be able to simulate conditions difficult or impossible to replicate in a wind tunnel, and provide data in unprecedented detail.  Development of CFD codes have also kept in pace with the rapid increase in computational power over the past 50 years. CFD has enabled industry to perform aerodynamic testing earlier in the engineering design phase, and its use is certain to increase in the future. Therefore the CFD research group has invested significant effort in developing its CFD tools and their capabilities.

These pages contain CFD tools developed by the CFD group. The main research focus is currently on the Parallel Multi-block CFD solver (PMB) and its helicopter and wind turbine variants, HMB and WMB. There is also an Open Source CFD solver available, and these tools will form the basis of further CFD research and development effort.
