Image Analysis for Microscopy

What is the conference for? IAfM-06 is an international conference that aims to bring together researchers from all scientific disciplines that make significant use of image analysis and image processing. This will include physics, chemistry, earth sciences and life sciences. The conference will focus on, but not be restricted to, images obtained from light microscopy and all types of scanning microscopy. The conference will have the following structure: Four half-day themed sessions Each session will have a lecture from an invited speaker Each session will have short oral contributions from participants Posters

    Submicron optical detection of neurotransmitter release

Who is it aimed at?

The conference is aimed at all researchers who use image analysis and image processing as an integral part of their research. Research students are particularly welcome as the diverse scientific community represented at IAfM-06 will give a wider context to the analysis being carried out by any one researcher. We hope that analysis that has been applied in one field may find application in others.

When?

The conference talks will start at 2.00 pm on Monday 19 June 2006 and finish at 12.00 on Wednesday 21 June 2006. For delegates from continental Europe these times should allow air travel on Monday morning and Wednesday afternoon/evening.

Delegates may wish to stay an extra day or two to explore the sights, sounds and culture of Liverpool. The Beatles Story at the Albert Dock is a popular attraction for tourists.

Where?

The conference will be hosted by the University of Liverpool and will take place in the Knowsley Rooms of the Derby and Rathbone Halls of Residence in the suburbs of Liverpool. Click here for a map of the site.

Accommodation and Catering

Accommodation will be provided for all delegates in the Derby and Rathbone Halls of Residence, where the conference is being held. Standard rooms have a washbasin in the room and shared bathroom/toilet facilities. En-suite rooms are also available.

All meals from Monday lunch to Wednesday lunch are included in the two-night accommodation costs.

If preferred, accommodation can be arranged at the Alicia Hotel (left) close to the conference or in the city (such as at the Marriott, right).

Travel

A number of low-cost airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair operate from Liverpool John Lennon Airport. A list of the European destinations served is available here.

Also Manchester Airport is about an hour away by train and has flights to destinations world wide.

Liverpool's principal train station is Liverpool Lime Street which has regular services to all major UK cities. Trains to and from London run typically every hour with a 2h 30m journey time - check National Rail for details. On the local train network the City Line station Mossley Hill (two stops from Lime Street) is just a few minutes walk from the conference site.

Contributions

Contributions are invited from all delegates in the form of short talks or demonstrations (approx. 20-25 minutes) or posters.

Ideally, a contribution should show, either as a demonstration or as a presentation of results, how image analysis or image processing has enabled or enhanced the scientific interpretation of images in such a way that the results are accessible to researchers in other fields.

Registration and Fees

It is intended that the conference fees will be kept as low as possible through subsidies and sponsorship. Students in the UK may be eligible for bursaries from the Institute of Physics (details will be provided on registration).

For registration after 19 April, the costs for fees and two nights accommodation (inclusive of all meals except the conference dinner) are as follows:

The conference dinner will be held on the evening of Tuesday 20 June at a cost of £15 / €25 per person.
