CA component and Key Skills for MATH102

As with all the Foundation Modules (MATH101-3), the continuous assessment component of MATH102 is 20 percent of the total assessment of the mdule. The homework counts for 10 per cent and the key skills component for the other 10 per cent.

For the homework, successful completion of each homework counts one per cent towards the total. Successful completion means an honest atempt (whether successful or not) as judged by your tutor.

The key skills component consists of two parts: presentation of a homework problem, worth 5 per cent, and a written key skills exercise, also worth 5 per cent, which will be set in Week 9.

The organisation of the homework presentations is up to your tutor, but quite often one student presents a homework problem each week. Your presentation will probably take less than 5 minutes, but the assessment critera are basically the same as for the longer presentations done for MATH101, for which the assessment sheets are available on the BMS webpages. Assessment is done by your tutor, who will give you some feedback.

The key skills exercise for MATH102 is an exercise which requires the student to take the part of assessor and teacher of an imaginary examinee. You will be given a fragment of an imaginary exam with an imaginary exam script. You will be required to give model solutions to the questions, then mark the script and write some helpful comments for the examinee. Assessment of your work is carried out by your tutor. The guide mark scheme for assessment is: model solutions: 2 per cent Marking and helpful comments/advice: 3 per cent. Helpful comments written out separately for the script are required for full marks.

The class test in the middle of MATH102 does not count towards assessment. Nevertheless, It is important for success in this module to work sensibly for the class test, making sure that you have understood the material thus far, and to take the test. It is also important to work steadily during the module, and to attempt all the homework, not just because homework completion is part of the assessment, but also because doing problems is the only way to understand the material, and to obtain a good mark in the exam.
