Ageing and Health

Welcome to the Web site of the Ageing and Health Research Group in the School of Psychology. The University of Liverpool has a long and influential association with the study of ageing and especially with the study of the psychology of ageing, both with the work of Emeritus Professor D B Bromley and with the Institute of Human Ageing. In 1966 Professor Bromley first published The Psychology of Human Ageing, one of the most popular texts on the psychology of ageing. In 1981 the Institute of Human Ageing was set up by Professor Bromley and Professor J Copeland from the Department of Old Age Psychiatry to explore issues of ageing and health across disciplines. And in the 21st Century Ageing Research is still going strong in the School of Psychology.

Today much of the ageing research which takes place in the School of Psychology concerns health and lifestyle. Research is undertaken in these broad areas:

• Ageing, marital status and gender
• Social activity and social relationships
• Physical activity and nutrition in older people
• The clinical psychology of older adults
• Caregiving in later life
