PhD and Postdoctoral Positions Available Now

Two Ph.D Studentships in

High-Throughput Materials Discovery Available 2005

Projects open to UK and EU citizens only

Applications are invited for 2 EPSRC-funded Ph.D. positions in high-throughput materials discovery in the research group of Professor A.I. Cooper.  The projects are available in the areas of:

  • discovery of functional nanostructures using combinatorial approaches
  • discovery of novel functional polymers using automated methods

Finding novel materials with exciting new properties by traditional methods can be slow and laborious.  Both of these projects will use state-of-the-art synthesis and characterisation techniques to prepare large libraries of materials (50-500 per library), thus massively accelerating the discovery process.  The goal is to find materials with step-change enhancements in properties that would not be discovered by chance using less rapid, conventional methods.  The use of sophisticated robotics for handling large numbers of consecutive operations will form a key aspect of this approach (e.g., see video clip above).

The successful candidates will work in a large, stimulating, and diverse research group (currently ~16 Ph.D. and Postdoctoral Researchers).  Both projects will involve collaboration with other international research centres and there will be opportunities to travel, both for collaborative visits and for conference attendance.  The projects form part of a larger research activity in materials discovery:  as such, there is some flexibility in the project plans and we will endeavour to map the nature of the projects onto the skills and interests of the appointees (e.g., the precise balance between synthesis, characterization, and computer modeling).

The positions are open to EU Citizens only.  Stipends are at EPSRC standard rates (£12,000 per annum in 2005/6, approx. 17,000 Euro).  A £1000 supplement is available in year one for candidates with First Class M.Chem or equivalent degrees.

Informal enquiries should be made to Professor Cooper by email (aicooper@liv.ac.uk). Candidates must be UK citizens and have at least a 2(i) in Chemistry, Physics or Materials Science.  Formal application procedures are outlined on http://www.liv.ac.uk/University/study_at_liverpool/how_to_apply/postgrad.htm.

Ph.D Studentship in

Polymer Synthesis Available 2005

Project open to UK citizens only

A PhD studentship is available in the area of polymer synthesis, to be cosupervised by Prof. Cooper and Prof. Rannard (Unilever Research).
