About

Personal Statement

Dorina Timofte is Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Clinical Microbiology in the Liverpool University School of Veterinary Science. She leads the Veterinary Microbiology Diagnostic Laboratory (VMDL) which provides an essential service for the referral hospitals (Equine, Small animals and Farm animals) and first opinion practices at Leahurst & Liverpool as well as for external veterinary practices.
Dorina is a veterinarian who qualified (DVM) from Iasi University, Romania in 1991. In 1998, Dorina was awarded a PhD and later on was appointed Reader in Microbiology at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Iasi where she worked until June 2004 when she moved to Liverpool.
In 2009, Dorina became the Head of the Veterinary Microbiology Laboratory in the Liverpool School of Veterinary Science and developed its activity extensively. As well as teaching vet students, she runs a state of the art diagnostic bacteriology facility routinely using modern technology such as proteomics and genomics to rapidly identify infectious agents and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes in a range of animal hosts. All of this is integrated into clinical teaching to enhance the vet students learning experience and practical knowledge.
Dorina’s leadership roles include the growth and continuing development of veterinary clinical microbiology and raising the profile of the diagnostic laboratory in antimicrobial stewardship. She established the first ECVM Residency training programme at Liverpool and participates in various clinical microbiology training events. Dorina leads one of the working groups within the European Network for Optimization of Veterinary Antimicrobial Treatment (ENOVAT) which is currently focusing on harmonisation of microbiology procedures across veterinary microbiology laboratories in Europe.
Dorina is the Chair of the Biosecurity and infection Control Committee in the School of Veterinary Science and she co-ordinates the laboratory side of the Environmental surveillance programme which is key for detecting important nosocomial pathogens in the hospital.
Her research focuses on the surveillance and molecular epidemiology of multidrug-resistant bacteria, particularly of healthcare associated infections in human and veterinary hospitals.
