Funding and Academic Careers, 15.10 till 16.00
This parallel session is about fellowships and research funding. Facilitators are experienced researchers who have been successful in winning research income or are holders of a prestigious research fellowship. The purpose of the session is to inspire participants and demonstrate the characteristics and challenges of a flourishing research career and the route towards becoming an independent researcher.
Parallel 3, Session 1:
Dr Darren Bradshaw
RCUK Academic Fellow & ERC Starting Grantee, Chemistry
In 2005, Darren, was awarded a 5-year tenure-track RCUK Academic fellowship in materials discovery, and was appointed to the faculty as a lecturer in 2010. In 2010 he was the recipient of a prestigious 5-year European Research Council (ERC) starting grant to develop ways to process MOFs into application-specific configurations inspired by natural biomineralisation processes.

Dr Violaine Sée BBSRC David Phillips Fellow, Biochemistry and Cell Biology
In 2005, Violaine, obtained a David Phillips fellowship to work on intracellular signalling dynamics at the University of Liverpool. She is now leading a research group of 5 persons (2 PhD students, 1 technician, 2 PDRA) and has just moved on a lectureship, after the end of her fellowship.
Parallel 3, Session 3:
Dr Jonathan Coleman
Royal Society Research Fellow, Physics
Jon is a Royal Society Research Fellow. He is presently engaged in the T2K project, working towards a measurement of the neutrino oscillation AngleTheta_13, covering construction and commissioning of the calorimeter for ND280, along with data analysis. Jon earned a Ph.D. from the University of Liverpool, he was awarded the Rutherglen prize for "outstanding work in High Energy Physics by a postgraduate student at one of the Universities associated with the Daresbury Laboratory".

Dr Kate Marsh
Senior Lecturer in French, Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship, Cultures, Languages and Area Studies
Kate is Senior Lecturer in French at the University of Liverpool. She is a specialist in French colonial history and her research focuses principally on French metropolitan representations of colonialism and on the rivalries and collusions between competing European colonial powers. Her research was funded by a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship, she is currently completing a short monograph entitled Empires in Contact, Empires in Conflict: The French Empire under Siege, 1784–1938 (forthcoming 2012), an output linked to the AHRC-funded project ‘Peripheral Voices and European Colonialism: Representations of India in French Literature and Culture, 1750–1962’ on which she is co-investigator. She is, in addition, editor of the Bulletin of Francophone Postcolonial Studies.
