Welcome to Accounting and Finance

Information for students starting study in September 2023.

Helen Scott, Director of Studies Accounting and Finance

Dear students,

My name is Helen Scott and I am the Director of Studies for Accounting and Finance. I’m really looking forward to meeting you during Welcome Week.

We have some really exciting activities planned, giving you a chance to meet lots of your fellow students on the programme.

For your first session you will be going on a treasure hunt (I promise it is quite fun), please remember to:

  • Dress for the weather
  • Wear sensible shoes
  • Try to make sure your phone is fully charged.

The event will end in a secret location which you will discover during the treasure hunt. There will be an opportunity to win a prize, see what others got up to, meet more people on your programme and have some well-earned refreshments.

You are going to see a bit of the campus, a bit of Liverpool and meet some new friends, so you have plenty to look forward to.

Aside from our welcome activity, here are my top tips for making the most of your time at the University of Liverpool:

  1. Be proactive! The more you put into your time here, the more you will get out of it. There are so many resources and opportunities available to you, make sure you get involved.
  2. Think! Your course becomes much more interesting when you really think about the topics you are covering and what they mean. You are studying a really practical subject that is in the news almost every day.

The more deeply you think about it, the more you can apply your knowledge to the real world and the more you will enjoy it.  If you want to start building your awareness of topical issues in the industry, you can check out the following news sources:
    • BBC Business
    • Financial Times – All of our students have free subscriptions to this.  If you can’t access it yet we will set you up when you arrive.
  3. Get involved! There are lots of opportunities to get to know your classmates and your lecturers are also keen to get to know you.

Having friends on the programme and feeling confident to approach your lecturers will not only make your experience more enjoyable, it is also key in building your network and many of our alumni are still in contact to this day.

Recommended reading

If you are looking for things to be reading before you arrive, the best preparation I would recommend is to look at some of those news sources listed above. The key thing is to really think about what you read and try to understand what is going on.

Question what you are reading too and think about the wider implications of a particular story. If there is something that interests you, look into it in more detail.

It isn’t about reading everything that’s going on in the business world but trying to really understand the things you do read about. This will help you develop the key skill of commercial awareness.

It's really important to put all of the knowledge you will gain during your studies into context. Accounting and Finance operate in a wider world that is impacted by economic and social issues, as well as lots of other factors.

Reading and thinking about what is going on in the business world will help build up your practical understanding of accounting and finance, which is very valuable.

Student advice

Shaun Morgan, Accounting and Finance with a Year in Industry (2019- 2023)

Top three tips for University:

  1. Organise your time wisely! University life can be busy and demanding, with numerous assignments, projects, and social activities. It’s essential that you keep on top of all your work. I personally use a student planner to keep track of all my commitments which prevents me from feeling overwhelmed.
  2. Get involved with extra activities and experiences. At university, there are so many things to get involved in. It’s a fantastic way to make new friends, develop your skills and explore your interests outside of academics.
  3. Just be yourself. The worst thing you can do is nothing. We all stumble from time to time, but it’s those people who turn themselves around that really shine. The university staff are always there to help and support you so don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
