Welcome from Professor Peter Shirlow, Head of the Institute
We are an interdisciplinary community of academics and students with an interest in Irish politics, history, literature, culture, society and language. You will not only learn about Ireland past and present, but be able to spent time in Ireland either on a fieldtrip or by taking a semester out at the National University of Galway.
You will also have the chance to compete for a place in the Washington Ireland Program and be invited to all our events, including a range of lectures given by leading academics, writers, politicians, peacemakers, Nobel Laureates and Presidents of Ireland.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. Our School Student Support Centre, based at 11 Abercromby Square is open from 9am - 5pm, Monday – Friday, or you can email us at hlcenq@liverpool.ac.uk.
I look forward to welcoming you to the Institute in person.
Based at the University of Liverpool, the institute is a focal point for all China-related activity in Merseyside, working closely with schools and colleges, local businesses, community groups and individuals to promote Chinese language and culture. Our Open Languages programme follows a blended learning approach, with weekly on-campus teaching, supported by additional learning materials in CANVAS, our virtual learning environment. Using CANVAS as a key part of our programme allows us to be flexible and makes use of the latest technology-enhanced learning styles.
Open Languages extracurricular modules are not credit-bearing, but do include regular (optional) assessment and feedback opportunities to allow students and tutors to measure and discuss progress. There are usually 11 weeks of teaching followed by the optional final assessment in the 12th week. The fee for the assessment is incorporated in the cost of the course which is the same whether you choose to take the assessment or not. Students who attend 70+% of the classes will receive a Certificate of Engagement. Additionally, current UoL undergraduates can request to have their Open Languages course recorded in their HEAR if they also sit the optional assessment, please email openlang@liverpool.ac.uk to enquire at the end of your course.
