This module seeks give an overview and understanding of how documentary photography works as part of social research, as well as provide students with basic photographic skills. Students will also find that this module is paired well with modules in urban sociology and visualising the city. Lessons will be delivered as a combination of lectures and problem-based learning workshops. In the first part of the module, there will be more traditional lectures and accompanying seminars covering the theories of photography and visual methods. In the second, students will instead attend weekly 2-hour workshops where they will get to learn and hone their photographic practice. Assessment will be in the form of essays and a final portfolio of sociological and photographic work. Students must have either a camera that allows for manual override settings (Digital SLR, Mirrorless, Advanced Compact) or be prepared to purchase the Camera+ app for their iOS smartphones (GBP4.99) or Camera FV-5 (GBP2.49) for their android smartphones (or any app that allows for manual settings of aperture, shutter speed and exposure compensation).
