Aims

- To engage in 48hrs of volunteering with a non-profit organisation

- Make connections between the placement experience and organisational theory, social policies, and practice

- To foster experimental learning requiring you to reflect on your placement experience and learning

- To assist you in bridging the gap between the workplace and your academic studies


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Have made a contribution to a non-profit organisation by working as a volunteer for a minimum of 48 hrs.

Syllabus

 

The syllabus for this module contains three key elements (i) practice placement (ii) policy and organisational theory (iii) reflective learning. These elements are brought together in the lecture and seminars where students are encouraged to engage in experiential learning.

Practice placement

- Undertaking a volunteering activity for 48hrs in a non-profit organisation

Policy and organisation theory

- The history and current state of the third sector in the welfare mix

- The nature of non-profit organisations within the local and national policy context

Reflective learning

- Applied theories of learning


Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Lecture
Description:

Notes: You will be offered lectures which will consist of formal presentations exploring the third sector and its interface with social policies, and the characteristics of non-profit organisations.

Teaching Method 2 - Seminar
Description:

Notes: Central to the learning in the seminars is the concept of experiential learning through a cycle of action and reflection. From the situated perspective of your volunteering activities you will be expected to discuss and apply your understanding to theoretical models to the practice you observe.

Teaching Method 3 - Work Placement
Description:
Attendance Recorded: Not yet decided
Notes: You will spend 48 hours volunteering with an organisation. The volunteering opportunities will be provided by Careers & Employability and will be with a non-profit organisation. This will usually be an organisation that offers welfare provision. During semester 1 you will be able to apply to an organisation and be expected to attend an induction seminar before beginning the module in semester 2.

Teaching Method 4 - Assessment
Description:

Notes: You will have the opportunity to produce a poster that you will present to the student group alongside a short oral presentationation where you will discuss your learning.
