Aims

- To provide an introduction to classical and contemporary social scientific approaches to the study of urban life

- To introduce key classical and contemporary academic studies of urbanism

- To situate the distinctive contribution made by sociologists to our understanding of cities

- To critically examine key empirical studies on the social and cultural aspects of city life


Learning Outcomes

• The Social Production of Places and Spaces
• Postmodern Urban Theory

ii) Urban Social Divisions
• Gentrification
• Ghettoization and Segregation
• Cities of ‘Slums’?
• Gendering Urban Space

iii) Urban Interventions
• The Garden in the City
• The Modernist City as anti-urban?
• Urban Politics and Protest

Description: Hybrid - asynchronous pre-recorded lectures

Teaching Method 3 - Field Work
Description:

Notes: a Field visit to Liverpool City Centre is based on a walking lecture taking in key urban sites and settings, including the waterfront and the so-called 'Museum Quarter'
