Aims

To encourage and enable students to think critically about the place of technology in society

To introduce students to key theories of the digital age

To introduce students to key debates regarding the implications of digitisation in social, political, economic, and cultural life

To encourage and enable students to reflect critically on their own digital lives and practice

Syllabus

 

The module involves theoretical and empirical engamgent with a range of broad and specific topics:

Technology, power, and social change;

Theories of the digital age;

Politics, power, and resistance in the digital age;

Cultures of sharing and the sharing of culture;

Digital participation and digital divides;

Virtual community;

The digital self and online identity;

Digital deviance and crime online;

Digital surveillance, regulation and privacy;

Research in the digital age.


Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Lecture
Hybrid - asynchronous pre-recorded lectures
Description: Weekly lectures will introduce students to key ideas, issues and debates.

Face to Face synchronous seminars, safety permitting
Description: Weekly seminars will involve group based discussion of ideas, issues and debates raised in the lecture and will be informed by required reading.
