Aims

The aim is to give the students an understanding of the principles and methods used in medical imaging in a clinical context. The students will cover a range of medical imaging modalities that are in used in hospitals. In addition to the lectures there will be a practical session in which students will use a benchtop CT scanner to obtain x-ray images of an object with the aim of understanding how the image reconstruction is carried out.

Syllabus

 

X-rays; planar and computed tomography imaging Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) Photoacoustic Imaging Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Ultrasound: B-scan Cardiovascular Imaging Breast Thermography Functional imaging imaging artefacts QC ALARA/ALARP image display: hard and soft copy, image perception gated and time-sequence imaging there is a practical session uing a benchtop CT x-ray scanner in the CTL. This is aimed at understanding image reconstruction. There is a visit to a SPECT/CT scanner at Daresbury. There is a one hour formative class test at the end of the module.

Description: Series of lectures covering a range of imaging modalities

Teaching Method 2 - Tutorial
Description: Problem solving and revision session

Notes: Students can get help with solving problems, see model solutions to problems and ask any questions

Teaching Method 3 - Laboratory Work
Description: Using a CT x-ray scanner and image recontruction sofware
Attendance Recorded: Yes
Notes: Students work in small group to get a CT x-ray image of a small object. They then inviestigate how image reconstruction is done. This work continues into the assignment where firther work on image reconstruction is carried out.
