Aims

The aim is to give the students an understanding of the principles governing the operation of diagnostic and theraputic methods used in medical physics. A series of lectures with cover a range of specific techniques and modalities, both in theory and in practice with the aim of giving the students more knowledge. The students will have  practical skills sessions to make measurements with a range of instrumentation with the aim of the students gaining experience with the techniques.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) An understanding of the physical principles underpinning measurements of pressure, flow and electrophysiology.

(LO2) An understanding of the relationship to clinical pathology, data processing and interpretation.

(LO3) An understanding of sources of error: random, systematic and human and an inderstanding of the sensitivity and specificity of measurement techniques.

Syllabus

 

Clinical Physiological measurement covering: Pressure, flow and electrophysiology calibration & traceability sensitivity & specificity.
Safety: COSHH, electrical, mechanical, biological, PPE transducers and signal detection instrumentation and signal processing electrical safety cardiovascular and respiratory measurements. Electrocardiogram: morphology and dynamics Electromyography: applied to functional assessment electroencephalogram urodynamics audiology, vestibular electrophysiology, ophthalmology and visual electrophysiology critical care monitoring. There are laboratory sessions using a range of measurement equipment. There is a formative class test at the end of the module
