1 Simple atomic structure, electron shells. Nature of interactions of radiation with matter. Interaction of alphas and heavy ions, rate of energy loss and range. Interaction of betas, range, absorption and backscatter. Interaction of gamma- and X-rays, photoelectric and Compton effects, pair production. Interaction of neutrons, slow and fast neutrons. Simple nuclear structure, nuclear shells. Nuclear stability and radioactive decay. Origins of decays involving alpha, beta, gamma, prompt and delayed neutrons, spontaneous fission, X-rays. Radioactivity units and energies. Radionuclide production processes, activation, fission, ractions. Parent-daughter relationships. |
