Aims

• To gain skills in developing musical forms beyond an original idea.
• To gain historical knowledge to contextualise their ideas.
• To develop self-critical thinking.
• To develop skills in basic transcription to communicate ideas to others.
• To develop aural skills.

Syllabus

 

• Melody writing. Chord progressions and development. The relationship between lyrical and musical elements. Using the studio as a creative tool.
• Making a record of their composition; 1) Basic lead sheet construction 2) Making an aural recording.
Students may find practical application for areas and concepts encountered in MUSI182 (Pop Theory) and should continue to improve aural skills introduced here in the development of compositional ideas. The module should also introduce ideas to be developed in MUSI210 Pop Comp 2.


Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Lecture
Description: synchronous face to face lecture will introduce key concepts and techniques

Teaching Method 2 – Seminar/Workshop
Description: synchronous face-to-face group session for review of lecture material and sharing/feedback on students’ individual projects.

Teaching Method 3 – Individual tutorials (if requested) to discuss assessment projects.

The majority of teaching will be delivered face-to-face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on-campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.
