Aims

To open students to the wealth of ideas associated with the significance of music, to highlight how a philosophical standpoint affords a critical perspective on questions of musical value, structure, meaning, affect, and socio-cultural use to reveal how music reflects and contributes to philosophical debates.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Gain familiarity with texts and contexts in the history of music aesthetics.

(LO2) Learn to reflect critically on conceptual readings.

(LO3) Learn to form connections to aural judgments.

(LO4) Improve the ability to organise and communicate challenging intellectual materials.

(S1) Critical reading and understanding.

(S2) Verbal expression and organisation.

(S3) Debating and defending intellectual positions in face-to-face contexts.


Syllabus

 

Topics will include: theories of musical objectivity and subjective judgement, formalism and expressionism, reception and listener-response theory, critical theory. the postmode in turn cognitive approaches to metaphor and affect.
