Aims

1. To increase awareness of, and ability to make judgements on, matters of intonation.
2. To equip students with the appropriate skills to be able to hear tempered intervals and to be able to justify the decisions necessary in their use.
3. To develop the ability to discern such intervals.
4. To develop understanding of the theory involved in tuning decisions.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will develop critical faculties and acuity of hearing

(LO2) Students will develop control and critical faculties on matters of intonation

(LO3) Students will develop control of their own intonation while playing/singing

(LO4) Students will communicate an understanding and knowledge of temperament and tuning systems.

(S1) Problem solving/ critical thinking/ creativity analysing facts and situations and applying creative thinking to develop appropriate solutions.

(S2) Self-management readiness to accept responsibility (i.e. leadership), flexibility, resilience, self-starting, initiative, integrity, willingness to take risks, appropriate assertiveness, time management, readiness to improve own performance based on feedback/reflective learning

(S3) Communication skills.


Syllabus

 

The syllabus consists of two strands, each of which are organised around the needs and prior experience of students. Individual lessons will develop students' technical skills on their own instrument through an appropriate choice of repertoire. Group sessions/online activities and the use of technology will develop students' listening skills through hands-on experience of tuning and pitching work.
