Aims

To introduce students to a composition for mixed media.
To enable students to use video in non-linear applications.
To develop the students’ knowledge of synthesis techniques.


Learning Outcomes

What is visual music and AV composition?
Recording and editing video
Using Max and Live to control and mix video files
Modular synthesis techniques
Granular synthesis techniques
Using synthesis parameters to control video


Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method - Workshop
Description: (90mins x12) The workshop will be focused on student practice. Tasks will be set outside of workshop time which will facilitate practice of the techniques covered in the instructional videos; students will bring complete tasks or work in progress to workshops for feedback and guidance. In the latter stages of each project the workshops will be used for technical support and feedback on work-in-progress.

Self-directed learning: As well as reading around topics of visual music and video art, students will be required to go out and record video and capture sound for their projects. They will also need to practice synthesis and patch editing techniques to develop their skills. The majority of time spent editing and composing will be done outside the normal workshop hours. Online instructional videos will be provided.

Tutorial: Individual tutorials can be booked with the lecturer in the latter stages o f the project.
