Aims |
|
The module will introduce the student to the complexities of forward planning for an orchestra and for two venues. The module will encourage students to consider the interactions between satisfying audience demand for familiar repertoire and the orchestra's (and institution's) need for innovation. Students will be made aware of the challenges associated with co-managing across three programmes - that of the orchestra, the concert hall and the 'Music Room'. Students will be introduced to managerial demands in terms of their similarities and differences per objective, goal and department under consideration. |

Syllabus |

The Symphony orchestra (models, contract/freelance, freelance workforce pool/supply chain, skills and systems). Managing Musicians (elite performance, professional development, leadership, health and well being, artistic/creative career development). Conductors and Artists. Programming, repertoire and commissioning new music/projects. Delivering Events Venue Management Recording and distribution – including artistic vs commercial, distribution channels, purpose and reputational value touring. This module will follow the first semester module on 'Managing Classical Music'. It will look in greater depth at the many different activities and challenges encountered by managers in their roles. These roles (or, at least, a selection of them) will be encountered directly in the second semester 'internship' module. In these ways, students should expect to be immersed in issues of managing creative people and creative projec ts. The recommended literature will offer guidance, analysis and reflection on these challenges. |
