Aims

To enable students to develop group and individual rehearsal skills.

To enable students to develop group and individual performance skills.

To enable students to improve their individual instrumental or vocal technique, focusing on the ability to perform with confidence and fluency.

To help students to gain a greater awareness of the issues that support the performance of popular music.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will develop communication and interpretative skills through the rehearsal of popular music.

(LO2) Students will develop their communication and performance skills through the live performance of popular music.

(LO3) Students will be given the opportunity to study, practice, learn and develop their individual instrumental and/or vocal skills.

(LO4) Students will develop their teamwork skills in their groups, to formulate, organise, prepare and deliver a short performance.

Syllabus

 

A series of platform sessions, workshops and tutorials will take place, which will be supported by online learning activities. Through the use of these learning activities, students will explore such topics as: group dynamics, ensemble skills, stagecraft, professionalism, exploring different textures, collaborative writing and using backing vocals. In addition, students receive individual instrumental tuition on a single instrument of their choice, which will be tailored to the students’ individual needs and build on their existing technical, expressive and creative skills.


Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Workshop
Description: Student groups perform to each other and give and receive constructive feedback from tutors and their peers. Performance topics are addressed as they arise.

Teaching Method 2 - Band Rehearsals
Description: Student groups arrange their own rehearsals, periodically attended and guided by module tutors and instrumental tutors.

Teaching Method 3 - Tutorial - either face-to-face or online
Description: One-on-one tutorials are arranged to give assessment task feedback, and for students to discuss issues relating to the module.

Teaching Method 4 - Masterclass
Description: Visiting professionals to give insights into music industry skills and practice.

Teaching method 5 – Seminars – either online or face-to-face
Description: group sessions will be held to discuss various aspects of popular performance
