Learning Outcomes

(LO1) After completing the project with suitable guidance the student should have
· understood an area of advanced theoretical physics
· had experience in consulting relevant literature
· gained experience in using appropriate mathematics
· made a critical appraisal of the current understanding of the area · learnt how to construct a written essay and given an  oral presentation

Syllabus

The co-ordinator arranges for the student to discuss with possible supervisors to find a topic of mutual interest. It should be borne in mind that this module is intended as preparation for the two-unit fourth-year module MATH420, and so the topic for MATH432 may be chosen to serve as an introduction to that of MATH420. A decision should be made before the end of the first semester, so that some preliminary reading can be embarked upon during the Christmas vacation.

During the second semester there are weekly consultations with the supervisor, who suggests specific reading and outlines the relevant material. Towards the end of the project, the student is given guidance on report writing and oral presentation and instruction in the use of a scientific word-processing package such as TeX.

Detailed submission requirements are given to students in advance.

The student will be required to give a short oral presentation on the results of the project.
