Aims |

The aim of this module is for students to engage in in-depth legal research and produce a sustained, scholarly piece of academic writing.
|
Learning Outcomes |

To develop the capacity to plan and execute legal research.
|

Demonstrate the principles and techniques of advanced legal research. |

Show an understanding of the relevant social, economic, political, historical, philosophical, ethical, scientific and cultural contexts within which the chosen specialist area(s) of law operate(s).

Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the chosen specialist area(s) of law.

Be aware of and understand current legal developments in the chosen specialist area(s) of law.

Analyse, evaluate and interpret the principal source materials of the chosen specialist area(s) of law, including national statutes, national, European and international law reports, treaties, directives and other relevant materials as appropriate.

Locate and engage with wider secondary and scholarly literature in the chosen specialist area(s) of law.

Critically evaluate different legal and scholarly sources and arguments.

Students will meet with their supervisors on a regular basis to discussion the planning and execution of their independent research. Students will engage in their own self-directed research: planning, researching and drafting their dissertation.

Teaching and Learning Strategies |
|
Supervision - Up to 12 one to one sessions on a regular basis The supervisor will be the primary point of contact for the LLM by research student throughout the year. Students will meet their supervisors to discuss planning, research avenues and strategies and substantive work. Supervisors will provide substantive feedback and help on all aspects of the dissertation. |

Coursework | 40,000 Words | Semester 3 submission | 100 | Yes | Standard UoL penalty applies | Dissertation Notes (applying to all assessments) The dissertation will be assessed by two examiners, one internal examiner from the University of Liverpool and one external examiner chosen by the supervisor. The dissertation is marked according to the usual LLM criteria – namely fail, pass, merit and distinction. The dissertation will be assessed by the supervisor and the external examiner, with the two jointly agreeing on an overall result. |
