Aims

To develop further knowledge of EU Law, by exploring a range of specialist topics relating to the EU's competence over social law and policy within the Member States;
To explore the relationship, and tensions, between the EU's economic and social competences.


Learning Outcomes

Introductory lectures: Historical Development of European Social Law and and Relationship with Economic Integration; Current Competences; New Modes of Governance and Mainstreaming;

Seminar: Impact of EU Enlargement on Social Law and Policy;

Week Six:
Lecture: Key themes

Week Seven:
Seminar: Citizenship of the Union II;

Week Eight:
Seminar: Health and Environment Law and Policy;

Seminar: Health and Environment Law and Policy;

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Lecture
Description:

Notes: Two one hour lectures designed to introduce the module and the study of the law relating to EU social competences will be given in weeks 1 and 2. An additional one hour lecture will take place during the semester and will cover common themes that run through the different seminar topics.

Teaching Method 2 - Seminar
Description:
Attendance Recorded: Not yet decided
Notes: EU Social Law is primarily taught through a seminars designed to reinforce independent learning and develop skills. These seminars take place weekly and last 90 minutes. This means that learning in this module is not focused around lectures; instead, you are expected to complete the set reading in advance of each session and come prepared to ask questions, discuss the materials and debate key points.
