Aims

To stimulate the academic interest of students and develop knowledge and skills in a complex area of law.

To enhance general legal and transferable skills in the context of the subject area.

To apply theoretical knowledge within a practical context , via student-led debate and group tasks.

To develop materials and undertake tasks within a practical context.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of concepts of the law related to charities.

(LO2) Research the relevant laws and policy and present an effective argument based in critical analysis of the law in its social and policy context.

(LO3) Demonstrate understanding of the practical implications of charity law for organisations.

Syllabus

 

The indicative syllabus will cover:

Fundamentals of charity law and then a selection of:
•Public benefit controversies: schools
•Charities and Counter-Terrorist Financing
•Charities and Social Housing
•Charities and discrimination
•Charities and campaigning
•Donation and the law
•Charities and access to justice


Teaching and Learning Strategies

Students will have introductory lectures on the fundamentals of charity law. Students will then have a series of bi-weekly two-hour debates seminars, led by a member of the teaching team. Each debates seminar will focus on a topic or controversy in charity law.
Each debates seminar will have an associated asynchronous recorded lecture (1 hours worth of material) to be viewed in advance of the seminar.
The final seminar will provide the opportunity for revision of the common themes of the various charity topics and debates and Q&A on the coursework.

5% Attendance at Seminars 1-4 (1.25% available for each seminar attendance) There are 4 substantive seminars (‘debate sessions’) in the module. A maximum possible 5% is available for attendance at          
5% Summative MCQs based upon the material from the Fundamentals of Charity Law lectures. There is a resit opportunity. These questions test students’ understanding of materials delivered in firs         
Essay relating specific seminar topics to general concepts. 2,500 words, not including footnotes There is a resit opportunity. Standard UoL penalty applies for late submission. This is an anon    90
