Aims

To examine the interaction between the law, ethics and medical and scientific practice.      
To develop students' ability to appreciate how the fundamental principles of law dealt with in Medical Law and Ethics I are developed and re-shaped in light of novel technological and medical developments.
To enable students to understand the relevant case-law, clinical literature, statutory materials and their relationship to ethical debate.

Learning Outcomes

(LO1) An appreciation of long standing and new challenges which have arisen in the medico-legal arena from a regulatory and ethical perspective as well as from a purely legal perspective.

(LO2) The ability to engage in reasoned arguments in a field of study which arouses strong emotions and arrive at independent conclusions.

(LO3) An understanding of the legal and ethical issues involved in particular areas of medical practice.

(LO4) An ability to identify correctly and apply the law and ethical principles to hypothetical facts

(LO5) An ability to adopt a critical perspective to existing legal rules and/or practices, and to identify constructive suggestions for reform

(S1) Critical thinking and problem solving - Critical analysis

Syllabus
 

Indicative topics the module may cover include (final syllabus will be made available to students ahead of the semester via Canvas):

-Autonomy
-Children and decision making / adolescent autonomy
-Reproductive autonomy - The right not to reproduce (sterilisation and abortion)
-The right to reproduce (assisted reproductive technologies)
-Future reproductive technologies on the horizon (ectogenesis /artificial / mechanical wombs) and uterus transplants.
