Aims

The aim of this module is for students to engage in in-depthlegal research and produce a sustained, scholarly piece of academic writing. To offer students the opportunity to develop anoriginal, self-directed legal research project at an advanced level. To provide students with the opportunity toundertake advanced study in a subject area of their choice. To develop students’ ability to produce academicand scholarly writing.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) To develop the capacity to plan and execute legalresearch.

(LO2) Demonstrate the principles and techniques of advancedlegal research.

(LO3) Show an understanding of the relevant social, economic,political, historical, philosophical, ethical, scientific and cultural contextswithin which the chosen specialist area(s) of law operate(s).

(LO4) Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the chosen specialistarea(s) of law.

(LO5) Be aware of and understand current legal developments inthe chosen specialist area(s) of law.

(LO6) Analyse, evaluate and interpret the principal sourcematerials of the chosen specialist area(s) of law, including national statutes,national, European and international law reports, treaties, directives and otherrelevant materials as appropriate.

(LO7) Locate and engage with wider secondary and scholarlyliterature in the chosen specialist area(s) of law.

(LO8) Critically evaluate different legal and scholarly sourcesand arguments.

(LO9) Convey legal argument and information in a writtenstandard appropriate for advanced legal scholarship

(S1) The ability to independently plan and implement legal research.

(S2) The ability to formulate a legal research question and independently investigate that question.

(S3) The ability to conduct legal research across a range of sources, both legal and academic.

(S4) The ability to critically analyse, engage with and assess different legal and scholarly sources.

(S5) The ability to present research in an appropriate format and convey written information in a scholarly manner.


Syllabus

 

Students will meet with their supervisors on a regular basis todiscussion the planning and execution of their independent research. Studentswill engage in their own self-directed research: planning, researching anddrafting their dissertation.

Teaching Method 1 - Supervision
Description: Up to 12 one to one sessions on a regular basis
Attendance Recorded: Not yet decided
Notes: The supervisor will be the primary point of contact for the LLM by research student throughout the year. Students will meet their supervisors to discuss planning, research avenues and strategies and substantive work. Supervisors will provide substantive feedback and help on all aspects of the dissertation.
