Aims

Public Law (McMaster Only) seeks to:

- explore the nature and functions of administrative law in constitutional context;
- provide students with a knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles and institutions of the UK constitution;
- identify and analyse selected key issues that are of critical importance to the UK’s system of public law;
- enable students to develop a range of core legal and transferable skills, and become effective independent learners.

1. Introduction to the foundations of administrative law
2. Political accountability and the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman
3. Legal accountability: Judicial Review (purpose and process, incl Human Rights; remedies and procedure)
4. Contemporary issues in Administrative law (eg ouster clauses)

Notes: Students will attend 3 x 1.5 hour tutorials. They will be required to answer set questions having undertaken study and research on focused areas covered in lectures.

Notes: Students will attend 2 x 1 hour workshops. The purpose of the workshop is to consolidate learning and practice application of the law.
