Aims

1. To stimulate the academic and practical interest of students in a challenging area of law.

2. To encourage and develop analytical thinking.

3. To enable the creation of effective solutions to legally and factually complex problems.

4. To develop the capacity to construct an effective argument, soundly based in critical analysis of the law both orally and in writing.

5. To cultivate a range of fundamental legal and transferable skills.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Demonstrate an understanding of the institutional and normative foundations of world trade law

(LO2) Evaluate the WTO covered agreements and their various implications from a legal perspective

(LO3) Appreciate the role of dispute settlement within world trade, including its merits and demerits

(LO4) Critically appraise world trade law from the perspective of different groups of states, business interests and other interest groups, including environmental and social interest groups

(LO5) Use and understand complex legal texts, case law, and academic writing to identify solutions for legal and policy issues arising from the application of world trade law

Syllabus

 

The module will address key topics concerning the formation, application,and evolution of world trade law.

Some of the topics to be covered in the module are as follows:

1. Theory and ideology of trade law
2. Sources of world trade law and interpretation
3. Dispute settlement in trade
4. WTO Market Access and MFN
5. RTAs and PTAs
6. WTO National Treatment
7. General Exceptions
8. Trade in Services
9. Subsidies and Trade Defence Instrument
10. SPS and TBT
11. Trade and National Security
12. Reform of the WTO


Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Patterns
Learning and teaching on this module will be structured in accordance with the principles of Hybrid Active Learning with asynchronous materials and synchronous seminar sessions. Asynchronous recordings provide material previously addressed in physical lectures, suitably broken down (‘chunking’) and augmented (e.g. quizzes etc) so as to enhance student engagement. Synchronous sessions will run on a fortnightly pattern across the semester (i.e. 6 in total) and will each have a duration of 2 hours.

Module Delivery
The course will be delivered through twelve asynchronous lectures 90-minute lectures and six synchronous 2-hour seminars.

Part 2: A take-home exam , with two questions (up to 1500 words )This will count towards 80% of the final mark.      80
