Aims

To allow students to develop their reading knowledge of German literature; To further students' linguistic skills in German; To enable students to understand literary texts in their historical, political, social and literary contexts; To develop students' research skills through targeted tasks; To develop students' academic writing skills.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Supervision
Description: Students will meet regularly with an academic supervisor in order to discuss reading progress and to gain feedback on the assignments.

Syllabus

 

Students will choose one book from a short list to focus their work on; appropriate secondary literature, passages for commentary, and an essay title will be agreed in consultation with the academic supervisor. Titles may vary from year to year according to academic staff availability. Initially the choice will be from the following texts: Thomas Mann, Der Tod in Venedig (1911); Günter Grass, Katz und Maus (1961); Christa Wolf, Der geteilte Himmel (1963); UIrich Plenzdorf, Die neuen Leiden des jungen W. (1973).
