Aims

The overall aim of this module is three-fold: to enable students to gain background knowledge and key vocabulary relating to key events in China, to further consolidate students’ level of Chinese (e.g. pronouncing a text properly) through translation exercises (from Chinese into English).


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the basic structures of the Chinese language.

(LO2) Enhance students' awareness of cultural diversity

(LO3) Develop a more nuanced understanding of modern Chinese history and Chinese society in general.

(S1) Be able to understand and use a good range of vocabulary to discuss key political and social events in modern Chinese history;

(S2) Demonstrate good awareness of cultural diversity and intercultural communiation skill

(S3) Be able to translate texts on relatively complicated topics related to key political and social events in modern and contemporary China and critically analyse relevant translations.


Teaching and Learning Strategies

The majority of teaching will be delivered face-to-face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on-campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.

The module will be taught through a weekly lecture and seminar.

Weekly topics may include:

Mao Zedong and the founding of the ‘new China’ in 1949;

Reform and Opening-up;

‘One Country Two Systems’;

Hong Kong as a special administrative region;

Cross-strait relations with Taiwan;

China-US relations;

China-Japan relations;

The Belt and Road;

Urbanization.
