Aims

To equip final year students with sophisticated expressive skills in the area of formal text production on an advanced level in a variety of genres;

To provide translations skills in different styles, registers and genres;

To develop grammar skills to an advanced level;

To develop advanced listening skills;

To develop speaking and presentation skills through specific oral classes.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The majority of teaching will be delivered face-to-face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on-campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.

Seminar:
The seminars consist of three weekly language classes, with one hour concentrating on aural skills, one hour on speaking and writing skills in a variety of genres and one hour in translation skills.

Tutorial:
Individual 15 minute tutorials are available (usually in week seven) to receive feedback and discuss learning strategies.

Syllabus
 

The translation work will include analysis of published translations in order to deepen the students’ critical evaluation of translated texts into Italian. The listening activities are designed to develop students’ aural and visual comprehension and appreciation of pragmatic and performative aspects of oral communication which are culturally specific. The topic-based discussions will form the basis for oral and written production. The choice of topics will give students the opportunity to investigate aspects of Italian culture and society. The discussion will be based on the reading of an Italian novel or collection of short-stories as well as the media.
