Aims

To build on existing language skills focusing on all four areas of language competence;

To provide students with a sound understanding of the more complex structures of Italian grammar;

To encourage students to explore aspects of contemporary Italian culture and to reflect on some key Italian social and economic trends through the medium of Italian;

To develop students' language learning strategy use and reflective approach towards language learning.


Learning Outcomes

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The majority of teaching will be delivered face-to-face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on-campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.

Seminar:
The module is taught through two weekly language classes and one language laboratory session. Consistent use of the target language, individual research, the personal contribution of students and a collaborative approach are key elements of the module. The module is intensive and students are expected to attend and take active part in all sessions and to hand in regular directed work. Contemporary Italian life and culture are explored through a variety of journalistic and literary texts, films and TV programmes. It is essential to follow up classes with further extensive reading and listening activities using the range of supporting multimedia facilities located either in the MLC Library or in the Sydney Jones Library. To foster a reflective and independent approach to learni ng students are encouraged to compile a personal learning diary in preparation for the reflective component of their coursework.

Tutorials are periodically arranged to discuss performance and to provide support where necessary.


Syllabus

 

Three weekly seminars focused on language, skills, and topics. Selected topics will provides the focus for all language work. It is normally expected that three weeks will be spent on each topic and students' preferences will be taken into account. Tutorials will take place in tutorial week.
