Aims

To provide students with good competence in reading including a novel in German or business related material;

To develop further skills in grammar building on semester one grammar topics;

To help achieve a good level in oral expression;

To write in a variety of genres;

To improve listening to both authentic and graded materials even further.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Ability to feel confident reading larger texts including novels and specific language, such as business German.

(LO2) Ability to build on grammar skills and practice also the future tense, comparative, superlative, modal verbs etc.

(LO3) Apply oral skills in class and in the reading or business project.

(LO4) Apply genres such as writing a story, a letter to the editor, a portrait of a famous person and a summary.

(LO5) Confidence in listening to longer audios and videos.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The majority of teaching will be delivered face-to-face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on-campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.

Seminar:
The seminars consist of two hours per week general language teaching (speaking, listening, reading and writing) in German, one hour per week grammar with a first brief introduction in translation and interpreting skills (taught in English) as well as a language lab class to train listening comprehension every other week.

Tutorial:
Voluntary individual (15 minutes) oral tutorials are available where you will practice your oral skills and also will receive feedback and have an opportunity to discuss your learning strategies.

Students may benefit from extracurricular activities organised by a native speaker intern, the German Society and a conversation exchange organised through our Modern languages resource centre. Students will continue practicing their basic translating and interpreting skills.
