To introduce and consolidate a basic use of Spanish language in a variety of different contexts and registers and to explore aspects of contemporary Peninsular and Latin American Spanish language and culture;

To develop and consolidate basic reading and listening comprehension skills in Spanish in a variety of different but familiar contexts and registers;

To communicate effectively in basic written and oral Spanish in a variety of different but familiar contexts and registers.

(LO1) On successful completion of this module, students will demonstrate a basic understanding of Spanish grammar in different but familiar contexts.

(LO2) On successful completion of the module, students will demonstrate a basic understanding of the different Spanish-speaking cultures.

(LO3) On successful completion of the module, students will demonstrate basic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in a variety of familiar contexts and registers.

This module is delivered in four contact-hours per week distributed as follows: Two hours of grammar and written skills, one hour of speaking skills and one hour of reading and listening skills and pronunciation in a language laboratory. The socio-cultural content is integrated across lectures, seminars and the lab in all four hours; therefore, regular attendance is very important in order to progress swiftly to the expected level at the end of the module. Students are also expected to undertake regular independent language learning to keep building and reinforcing their language skills and to schedule at least a one-to-one session with tutor mid-semester.

The majority of teaching will be delivered face-to-face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on-campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.

Seminar:
You will receive four one-hour language classes per week distributed as follows: 2 hours grammar and written skills , one hour of speaking skills and one hour of reading and listening skills and pronunciation in the language laboratory.

Tutorial:
One-to-one tutorial.

Laboratory Work:
Weekly, one hour in a language laboratory.

This is an introductory course in Spanish language and culture mapped against the A1 level of the CEFR. The Syllabus can be found in the module handbook which can be accessed through Canvas.  Each student is issued with a weekly schedule for the module at the beginning of each semester.
