Aims

To improve students’ skills in written Portuguese;

To improve students' skills in written translation from Portuguese into English and from English into Portuguese;

To consolidate and improve students’ knowledge of advanced Portuguese grammar;

To improve students' reading and comprehension skills in written Portuguese;

To improve students' communication and comprehension skills in spoken Portuguese via classes with a native speaker;

To explore aspects of contemporary Portuguese-speaking culture through the medium of Portuguese.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) On completion of the module students will have acquired a solid knowledge and understanding of advanced Portuguese grammar

(LO2) On completion of the module students will have acquired the skills involved in translation and be able to apply these to produce high quality translations of Portuguese texts into English, as well as translations into Portuguese

(LO3) On completion of the module students will be able to apply their knowledge of advanced Portuguese grammar and lexis in order to write compositions in Portuguese at an advanced level

(LO4) On completion of the module students will be able to understand spoken and written Portuguese at an advanced level

(LO5) On completion of the module students will be able to communicate in grammatically accurate spoken Portuguese at a high level on a range of subjects

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The majority of teaching will be delivered face-to-face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on-campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.

Other:
The methodological approach is varied, with the three different types of classes teaching different skills. The Lusophone culture classes will focus on the development of reading, writing, intercultural, and critical skills in a variety of registers and forms. Analysis of Portuguese-language texts and audio-visual material, along with vocabulary development are central to the teaching methods. This class will offer an opportunity for students to consolidate their knowledge of Lusophone cultures through literature and film.

The oral classes will consolidate knowledge and perfect the accurate and advanced use of spoken Portuguese. The tutor will prepare activities and will use a variety of media to provoke discussion. The classes are intended to be lively and as spontaneous as possible, and students are encouraged to participate actively. Each class will work around a specific theme or topic. Verbal feedback will be given during the classes with a view to facilitating students' development of appropriate, accurate and fluent usage of Portuguese. The translation classes will alternate between Portuguese to English and English to Portuguese written translations. Texts will be of varying registers and styles. Students will also analyse existing English translations of Portuguese texts, which they will be required to edit and comment on. Verbal feedback will be given during the classes, which often involve small-group or pair work, enabling students to correct and/or improve their own translations and engage in team work.

Lusophone culture: literature, film, and visual arts;

Advanced grammar revision and writing skills;

Portuguese translation skills development;

Oral classes on contemporary Lusophone cultural topics (e.g. immigration and racism, social classes, gender politics, etc.).
