Aims

To provide a stimulating learning environment in which students develop their linguistic skills in Spanish;

To enable students to understand both written and spoken Spanish and to analyse the linguistic nature of Spanish;

To enhance and develop the oral and listening practical skills;

To assist the students in speaking Spanish accurately and fluently.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Upon completion of the module, students will have consolidated and extended their existing knowledge and ability to use the Spanish language and will have developed  all skills: speaking, listening, reading, writing and interacting.

(LO2) Upon completion of the module, students will have developed their translation and written skills and will be able to demonstrate a deep understanding of the structures, lexicon and registers of Spanish.

(LO3) Upon completion of the module, students will have improved their listening and speaking skills in order to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts and using the appropriate registers in more complex or professional environments.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The majority of teaching will be delivered face-to-face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on-campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.

Lecture:
Lectures consist of one hour per week of integrated skills classes, which include presentation, and practice of Spanish grammar and vocabulary in context and following a communicative approach. Students will have to do weekly preparation in advance of the lectures with the resources made available by their tutors.

Seminar:
The writing seminar consist of one hour per week of practical reading and writing skills development sessions, which focus on written interaction including translation, and following a communicative approach. Students will have to do weekly preparation in advance of the seminars with the resources made available by their tutors.

Seminar:
The speaking seminar consist of one hour per week of practical listening and speaking skills develop ment sessions, which focus on oral interaction including listening and speaking activities and following a communicative approach. Students will have to do weekly preparation in advance of the practical sessions with the resources made available by their tutors.


Syllabus

 

Culture and society topics include: understanding and discussing social, political, economic, and work-life issues in Spain and Latin America; reading contemporary prose written in Spanish, and watching contemporary films in the Spanish language.

Language topics include: revision of syntax, accentuation, and punctuation rules; lexical and grammatical devices to create textual cohesion; enhancing vocabulary for descriptions; the combination of past tenses; future and conditional tenses; passive and impersonal constructions; ser vs estar; subordination and further uses of the subjunctive; relative subordinate clauses and past participles; uses of the gerund; prepositions and specific constructions; personal and object pronouns.
