Aims

To provide students with competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking Chinese at post-basic level;

To guide students to explore aspects of Chinese customs, etiquette and culture through the study of its language.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Be able to write approximately 250 Chinese characters and read short passages of Chinese.

(LO2) Demonstrate post-basic knowledge of the Chinese grammar.

(LO3) Be able to hold short conversations on various topics.

(LO4) Demonstrate post-basic knowledge and understanding of Chinese culture.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The majority of teaching will be delivered face-to-face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on-campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.

Lecture:
The Lectures (delivered by a native speaker) will help students to acquire the relevant grammar and cultural knowledge and also give students a foundation of linguistic awareness, it aims to improve skills of reading and writing from a more theoretical and systematic aspect.

Seminar:
The seminars (delivered by a native speaker) are highly interactive and practical classes in which every student will be encouraged to play an active role and learn the written language, grammar, listening and speaking skills along with the related cultural knowledge.

Online Quiz:
By using the online-quiz based on the content learned in classes, it aims to consolidate the acquaintance of characters leaning with the web facilities and online visual aids, in a way that adapt to current students learning habit. Each online quiz session will be carefully prepared in advance to make sure that it copes with the content learned in classes, besides, the participation and use of the quiz will be registered and traced by tutors in order to assure the learning outcome.

Topics covered during the module may include:

Topics on time and making appointments; adverbial expressions of time, words of time and daily activities; expressing future aspect with 要; Chinese characters writing; phonetics drill on specific difficult syllables;

Topics on clothing and shopping; measure words, expressing past aspect using 了; Chinese characters writing; phonetics drill on specific difficult syllables;

Topics on locations and advertisements; expressing existence using有, expressing locations with the verb 在, directions places words; Chinese characters writing; phonetics drill on specific difficult syllables;

Topics on Transportation; alternative questions with 还是, making suggestions using 好吗 and 吧, Chinese characters writing; phonetics drill on specific difficult syllables;

Topics on sports and holiday plans; using modal verbs 可以 and 会, pivotal sentences, ta lking about past experience with 过; Chinese characters writing; phonetics drill on specific difficult syllables.
